The purpose of this program is to support the conservation, preservation, and protection of historically or culturally significant works of art from around the world that are in danger of deterioration, including objects that have been designated as national treasures. Artworks supported through this program must currently be on view to the public or become on view to the public once conservation is complete.

Artworks must be significant to the cultural heritage of the applicable country or region, or important to the history of art. Conservation efforts may involve paintings, works on paper, photographs, sculpture, architectural or archeological pieces, important books or manuscripts, tapestries, or works of decorative or applied art that are in danger of degeneration.
