Description:
The purpose of this program is to help cities use art and community engagement to improve street safety and revitalize public space by responding to the growing number of cities embracing art as an effective and relatively low-cost strategy to activate their streets. The program is designed to fund visual art interventions on roadways, pedestrian spaces, and public infrastructure in small- and medium-sized cities with populations between 30,000 and 500,000.
This program focuses on asphalt art, defined as visual interventions on roadways, including intersections and crosswalks; pedestrian spaces, including plazas and sidewalks; and vertical infrastructure, including utility boxes, traffic barriers, and underpasses. Program goals include:
  1. Improving street and pedestrian safety
  2. Revitalizing and beautifying underutilized public space
  3. Promoting collaboration and civic engagement in local communities
