Description:
The purpose of this program is to support communities served by the BNSF Railway. Awards will support general operating expenses, as well as specific projects or services, with a strong preference for requests associated with education, youth, and civic services. Applicants and proposed projects that fall under one or more of the following categories will be considered for funding:
  1. Civic: Organizations and projects under this category are concerned with the environment and conservation, as well as local community issues, such as crime prevention, parks and recreation, diversity, and community development.
  2. Culture: Organizations and projects under this category involve the performing, visual, and fine arts; museums; and other related activities that offer opportunities for underserved children to experience cultural learning events or preserve their cultural heritage.
  3. Education: This category includes public and private educational institutions, primarily at the college level. Vocational and non-college schools with projects of an exceptional nature may be considered. Preference is given to projects that focus on improvement in the quality of education.
  4. Health and human services: This category includes such organizations as the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) and the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA). Projects include hospital and medical projects, as well as projects that address chemical dependency treatment and prevention, spousal and child abuse, women’s and children’s aid, and transitional shelters.
  5. Youth: This category includes such organizations as Boys & Girls Clubs, Camp Fire, and Junior Achievement.
  6. Federally recognized tribal governments: This category includes tribal governments listed in the Federal Register by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
