The Flood Mitigation Assistance Program is a competitive grant program that provides funding to states, local communities, federally recognized tribes and territories. Funds can be used for projects that reduce or eliminate the risk of repetitive flood damage to buildings insured by the National Flood Insurance Program. Award recipients are chosen based on the applicant’s ranking of the project and the eligibility and cost-effectiveness of the project. Possible use of Flood Mitigation Assistance funds include:

  1. Project Scoping
  2. Technical Assistance
  3. Community Flood Mitigation Projects
  4. Individual Flood Mitigation Projects
  5. Management Costs

Projects must also:

  1. Be cost effective
  2. Located in a participating NFIP Community (In good standing)
  3. Align with the applicable FEMA-approved hazard mitigation plan
  4. Meet all environmental and historic preservation (EHP) requirements

Eligible applicants:

Town, City or County Government

Homeowners, business operators, and non-profit organizations cannot apply directly to FEMA, but can be included in a sub-application submitted by an eligible sub-applicant.
