The purpose of this program is to support research that addresses all areas of integrated solid waste management, with a strong focus toward research that increases sustainable solid waste management practices. For the purposes of this program, solid waste is defined as:
- Municipal solid waste, including residential, commercial, and institutional municipal waste
- Construction and demolition debris
- Certain industrial wastes and other wastes typically managed by the solid waste industry or generated by the public, including exploration and production waste, coal ash, electronic waste, and disaster debris
