Amount: An unspecified amount of funding is available to support 50 awards of up to $1,500 each through this program.
Eligibility: Eligible applicants are K-12 public schools, public charter schools, and school districts in the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. School administrators, teachers, or student leaders, with permission from school administration, may also apply.
The purpose of this program is to authentically and meaningfully engage students in schoolwide service activities during the weekend of Martin Luther King (MLK) Jr. Day of Service, which will occur from January 13, 2018, to January 15, 2018. K-12 public schools, public charter schools, and school districts will be selected to receive monetary awards to support their MLK Jr. Day of Service event(s) as part of their ongoing School of Service activities. Award recipients will also receive ongoing technical support, resources, and networking opportunities, as well as a platform to grow their service initiative.
Award recipients will be expected to:
  • Plan a schoolwide service project on MLK Jr. Day of Service that engages at least 500 youth/adult participants
  • Plan at least one project that focuses on economic opportunity supporting economically disadvantaged individuals
  • Train teachers and/or student leaders on how to organize projects
  • Document the service event attendance and impact made and report to the funding agency
  • Discuss the meaning and history of MLK Jr. Day of Service and teaching of Dr. King with students
  • Engage youth traditionally not asked to serve, such as students with disabilities or students from low-income families
