The purpose of this program is to help communities improve the public sphere for walking or otherwise help make walking more commonplace. Awards will help to catalyze smaller-scale, low-cost projects and programs that increase the prevalence of walking within communities, expand the diversity of people and organizations working to advance walkability, and help to make walking safer, easier, and more fun for all community members. Awards are expected to catalyze innovative projects. Examples include maps that help encourage residents to explore their neighborhoods on foot, murals that help to enliven the pedestrian realm, and targeted advertising that helps to get the word out about existing walking programs.
The funding agency expects that projects will also help to inspire and empower people working locally to effect positive changes that benefit all community members. Projects should also engage people and organizations new to walkability efforts, and must take steps toward creating a culture of inclusive health.
Ultimately, the overarching goal of the program is to create healthy, active, and engaged places where people live, work, and play, and where they have safe, accessible, and enjoyable places to walk and be physically active.
