Description:
The purpose of this program is to foster innovative local models in which volunteers assist family caregivers or directly assist older adults or adults with disabilities with non-medical care in order to maintain their independence. The funding agency seeks to fund local models that represent a diverse cross section of the nation reflective of geography, urban/rural/frontier and tribal communities, underserved and limited English-speaking populations, and communities with limited support programs. Local model volunteer programs must:
  1. Address an unmet need in the community
  2. Be delivered in home or community-based non-institutional settings
  3. Provide non-medical services such as:
  4. Respite
  5. Support groups
  6. Meal preparation
  7. Companionship and friendly visiting
  8. Help around the house
  9. Running errands
  10. Transportation
  11. Minor home modifications
  12. Stress reduction
  13. Assistance with home chores
  14. Education and training
  15. Provide services in coordination with a family caregiver (if applicable)
  16. Recruit and train volunteers who are age 18 and older
  17. Conduct a criminal background check on their volunteers
  18. Ensure that any personal identifying information (PII) from volunteers or from those receiving volunteer services is kept secure
