The purpose of this program is to support trained and certified volunteers to provide free tax assistance, including preparation of basic federal income tax returns, to low- to moderate-income individuals, individuals with disabilities, individuals with limited English proficiency, Native Americans, individuals who live in rural areas, members of the armed forces and their spouses, and the elderly. This program will support new and continuing programs that achieve the following objectives:
- Extend services to underserved populations in hardest-to-reach urban and non-urban areas
- Increase the capacity to file returns electronically
- Heighten quality control
- Enhance training of volunteers
- Improve significantly the accuracy rate of returns prepared at VITA sites
