Description:

Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grants support projects in two areas:

Hiring of Firefighters Activity to hire new, additional firefighters to improve staffing levels or changing the status of part-time or paid-on-call firefighters to full-time firefighters.

  1. Rehire: Rehiring firefighters who were laid-off within the two years prior to start of the application period;
  2. Retention: Retaining firefighters facing imminent layoff-within 120 days of the close of the application period; and
  3. New Hire: Hire new, additional firefighters.

Recruitment and Retention of Volunteer Firefighters Activity to assist fire departments with the recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters who are involved with or trained in the operations of firefighting and emergency response.

Total focus: With enhanced staffing levels, recipients should experience a reduction in response times and an increase in the number of trained personnel assembled at the incident scene.

Recruitment and Retention: The period of performance will be between 12 and 48 months for all grants awarded.

Eligible applicants:

  1. For Hiring Activity – Volunteer, combination and career fire departments
  2. For Recruitment and Retention of Volunteer Firefighters Activity – Volunteer and combination fire departments

Municipality or fire district may submit only one application under the Hiring of Firefighters Activity per application period for each eligible fire department within the municipality or fire district.
