The purpose of this program is to provide support to cities with populations of at least 30,000 as they innovate to face their current and future challenges. Projects should include innovative ideas that will allow cities to continue delivering results and will improve life for city residents. The program is designed with urgency in mind, and will support big, bold, inventive, and ultimately shareable ideas that tackle today’s biggest problems. Successful ideas might, among other things, reimagine or drastically improve how cities deliver services, create efficiencies, or improve citizen engagement.
The funding agency will help cities develop ideas. The first 300 cities that apply to this program will receive a visit from innovation experts, who will deliver one-day city hall training workshops to accelerate idea development by drawing upon their expertise. Workshops will take place between July 2017 and September 30, 2017.
All applicants will join Bloomberg’s City Network, and will receive expert guidance to develop their ideas.

Priority will be placed on projects that feature:

  • Openness and collaboration
  • Partnerships and engagement
  • Smart use of technology
  • Testing, learning, and adapting
  • Measurement
