The purpose of this program is to support the publication of nonfiction books concerning art, architecture and design, cultural history, and related public issues; and conservation and preservation. Support is provided for publication components such as writing, research, editing, indexing, design, illustration, photography, and printing/binding. The funding agency prefers work that:
- Appeals to an informed general audience, which includes readers who may be acquainted with a subject but are not exclusively scholars or specialists
- Gives evidence of high standards in editing, design, and production
- Promises a reasonable shelf life
