The purpose of this program is to support research and development projects that may ultimately enhance the development, health, safety, education, or quality of life of children from infancy through age seven. Projects should be of significant interest to other investigators or developers in the applicant’s field of endeavor, and be amenable to application and adaptation in other fields. This program intends to provide seed money for eligible projects that address the needs of young children and are most likely to make an impact on a national scale.
Funding will support projects in the following focus areas:
  • Early childhood welfare: projects that research best child-rearing practices and identify models that provide creative, caring environments to ensure all children thrive
  • Early childhood education and play: projects that improve the quality of both early childhood teaching and learning through the development of innovative curricula and research-based pedagogical standards, as well as the design of imaginative play materials and learning environments
  • Parenting education: projects that help parents create nurturing environments for their children by teaching parents about developmental psychology, cultural child-rearing differences, pedagogy, issues of health, and prenatal care and diet, as well as projects that provide both cognitive and emotional support to parents
