Description:

The Solid Waste Management Grant’s purpose is to reduce or eliminate pollution of water resources by providing funding for organizations that provide technical assistance or training to improve the planning and management of solid waste sites.

What may the funds be used for?

  1. Evaluating current landfill conditions to identify threats to water resources.
  2. Providing technical assistance or training to enhance the operation and maintenance of active landfills.
  3. Providing technical assistance or training to help communities reduce the amount of solid waste coming into a landfill.
  4. Providing technical assistance or training to prepare for closure and future use of a landfill site.

Special consideration may be given for projects serving:

  1. An area with fewer than 5,500 or fewer than 2,500 people;
  2. Regional, multi-state or national areas; or
  3. Lower-income populations.

These grants may not be used to:

  1. Duplicate current services, replace or substitute support previously provided, i.e., service already rendered by a consultant in developing a project.
  2. Duplicate assistance provided by the U.S. Forest Service.
  3. Pay for capital assets, real estate or vehicles.
  4. Pay for construction, operation or maintenance.
  5. Improve or renovate office space or repair or maintain private property.

Eligible applicants:

  1. Public bodies, i.e. city, county or state governments
  2. Non-profit organizations
  3. Federally recognized tribes
  4. Academic institutions

All applicants must have:

  1. Proven ability, background or experience to successfully complete a project similar to the one proposed
  2. Legal authority and capacity to provide technical assistance or training
