Becoming Van Gogh

by Janine Vanderburg

This weekend, I had the opportunity to visit the Denver Art Museum’s current blockbuster exhibit, Becoming Van Gogh. Studying some of the artist’s lesser known works juxtaposed with the work of other artists who served as inspiration, I was inspired and struck by the lessons that anyone engaged in community and social change can take away from Van Gogh’s process of becoming an artist.

1. It is never too late to start. Van Gogh started at age 27, and considered himself a late-starter.

2. Understanding and skills evolve. Through over 70 paintings created in a decade, the exhibit dramatically illustrates the progression of the artist from the dark sketches of people in his days in Holland to the vibrant colors for which he became known.

3. Work hard every day for continuous improvement (and don’t wait for inspiration!).

4. Borrow ideas from others. One of the most interesting facets of the exhibit was the placement of pieces by Van Gogh adjacent to pieces by artists from whom he borrowed ideas and techniques.

5. Develop your own voice. Important advice for both visual artists and artists in visualizing a better community.
